Your parents take care of you, feed you, tuck you in at night and make you feel safe. But what do you do when you think one of your parents is in trouble? Suddenly the person who keeps you safe isn’t safe themselves which can leave you feeling helpless.
One of the best things you can do is talk to your parent. Sometimes kids misinterpret how parents behave. Mom and dad can get angry too and might disagree and argue but that doesn’t mean they don’t love each other. Telling them how their fighting makes you feel can make parents look at how they handle disagreements and work on controlling how they show their anger so they talk about problems calmly.
Sometimes, however, arguments can get out of hand and lead to pushing, shoving, hitting and name calling. This behavior is not ok! No one should hurt another person in this way and in this case it’s best to get help.
Talk to an adult you trust, a counsellor, family friend or aunt or uncle who can talk to your parents for you and get them help if they need it. The Kid’s Help Phone can also talk to you about what’s going on and tell you who you should talk to for help. In a case where a parent has been seriously hurt you should call 911.
